Career and Research

In my work I focus on visual aspects of contemporary culture in a number of theoretical settings including deconstruction, globalization theory, theories of empire and nationhood, and theories of agency and mediation.

I have published on film, animation, social media, art, online gaming, transnational television, celebrity culture, focusing on Russia in the twenty first century.

I am the principal editor of an international journal Studies in Russian, Eurasian and Central European New Media (Digital Icons).

I regularly make appearances in international media including the BBC, Al Jazeera, American Public Radio, Calvert Journal, The Conversation, and others.

Prior to my present appointment I served as a visiting assistant professor at University College London. In 2001-5 I was based at the University of Pittsburgh (USA), first as a visiting researcher and later as a visiting assistant professor.  In 1998-2001 I was an assistant professor at the University of Voronezh (Russia). I also had teaching and research positions at the Universities of Helsinki, London, Edinburgh, Leuven and Moscow.
